HP Probook 5310m review

For such a thin, light laptop, HP’s ProBook 5310m packs quite the impressive bit of hardware. Unlike similar notebooks and netbooks, this laptop has no need to give up processing power in favor of portability or design. They also very truthfully boast the title “the world’s thinnest full-performance notebook”. Quite impressive and very fun.

The notebook’s base model comes equipped with a cool 2 megapixel webcam, 160 GB of hard drive, and 1 GB of RAM (DDr3). It also comes with a Vista OS, but it can easily be downgraded to the XP OS, and can be upgraded for the 7 OS. Amazingly, it starts at only 700 bucks. Really a bargain when you consider what a hot little machine it is.

It uses an Intel Celeron 3, SU2300 as its processor, but you can upgrade it to a much more energy efficient and quicker Intel Core 2 Duo SP9300 for only an additional 200 dollars. It’s packed with a super-fast, 7200 rpm model, 160 GB hard drive, but you’re given the option to choose up to a 320 GB hard drive. (You can also go as low as 80 GB, but why would you)? While it comes with 1 GB of memory, you can add up to 4 GB of additional memory.

It’s got itself a 13.3’’ LED screen, backlit, with a clear resolution of 1366 x 768. It also has a very nifty feature by the name of QuickWeb. QuickWeb allows you to go online without your OS booting up. How wonderful, all the joys of the internet in only about 20 seconds! No more waiting for Windows to load when you only want to go online!

HP Pavilion dm3t review

This sleek little $834.00 aluminum notebook provides a great performance with an amazing nine hours of battery life, but the touchpad will definitely slow you down a bit. While there’s no debate that this is the hottest ultrathin of the year, and it has a great starting price of only $649, the touchpad makes the laptop much less user friendly than it really should be. Still, I feel that you don’t need to spend close to $1600 on an Envy 13 when HP provides such cool looking, well performing similar laptops for less than half the cost.
The HP Pavilion dm3t is heavier than some similar ultrathins, weighing in at 4.2 lbs, but this is because it “omits” a DVD drive. It still only measures 1” thick, so even with the little extra weight, there’s no issue tossing it into your bag or backpack.

Some more bipolar news – the keyboard is wonderful. Definitely one of the better ones of its class. It provides plenty of well-spaced keys for your fingers to bounce off, and allows for faster typing speeds with fewer mistakes. But these big keys come at the expense of the very shrunken arrow keys. Not so fun. Plus the keys are not backlit.

Unfortunately, the touchpad, simply put, sucks. The surface is simply too glassy, picking up smudges quickly. Despite its very glossy feel, the damn cursor was stuck every other second, and required many attempts to move it. It was more like battling for control of the cursor than using a touchpad. This is definitely a try-before-you-buy deal.

The HP Pavilion dm3t’s 13.3” glossy display has roughly the same amount of pixels as just about any other ultrathin around (1366 x 768). It provides a wonderful view when browsing the net and doing other day-to-day things, but I did have to tilt the screen back quite a bit when using it in my lap. It’s low-light performance is wonderful. The sound was nice, but the higher the volume goes, the more distorted the sound becomes. Not a good sign. However, the sound was plenty loud at only 3/4 the max volume. Songs play well, as do shows.

On the left side of this model, you can find the ethernet, power jack, HDMI, VA, 2 USBs, and a five in one memory card reader. Plus, let’s not forget, the headphone and mic jacks. Opposite of that, you’ll find the kensignton lock slot, 2 more USB ports, and a Wi-Fi off/on button (as well as the power switch). Quite a nice set up, I think.

All in all, I have to say my experience with the HP Pavilion dm3t was pretty nice. While it’s not my favorite, I wouldn’t mind owning one. They’re compact and function well. They’re pretty good little notebooks, and I would recommend them to a friend. They’re just also a notebook that I would strongly recommend you try before buying.
