Laptop Hack Repair Laptop Power Jack with Ease

In this article I will show you the laptop hack : repair laptop power jack with ease trick, which is a how to repair a loose or disconnected DC connection in your laptop computer tip. So I say, laptop hack. After you read this, you’ll be able to make the repair yourself without the assistance of a costly computer repair technician. On a side note; I have done this repair many times, and am comfortable with doing opening my laptop. If you feel uncomfortable doing repair to your laptop, seek out the help of a professional. As with all computer repairs, there is a chance that you could permanently damage your computer. So please be careful.

The first step in laptop power jack repair is to take your computer apart and make sure to remove the motherboard. You can find the instructions on just how to perform this laptop hack by visiting your laptop manufacturer’s website. You’ll need the following tools: 1 Soldering iron (Set at around 800-850 F), Standard rosin core solder, De-soldering pump, 99% isopropyl alcohol, 1 clean tooth brush, 1 new DC power jack. Note: The underlined terms are things that you can research, online for a picture, in order for you to make your repair.

What we are going to do is de-solder the power-jack from the motherboard and clean all of the contacts. After that we are going to solder it back, thus fixing your laptops power issue.

Start by add some fresh solder to all 3 of the contact points. By doing this, you’ll make removing the old solder much easier. Next you heat up one of the contact point, and use the de-soldering pump to remove all of the soldering. Repeat this step on the other two contact points.

Very gently grab hold of the power-jack and try to remove it without apply much, if any, force. Most likely you’ll have to do this a few time, as there still will be some soldering left between the motherboard and the power jack. If you apply to much force when removing the power-jack you can damage the internal copper sleeve, so try to avoid that if possible.

After the power-jack has been removed, clean off all the contacts using a knife. Then apply a fresh coating of solder onto the clean contacts. Also if you have any residue on the motherboard, you can clean this off using a toothbrush. While this is not required, it does make your repair job look much cooler.

Next apply a thin layer of fresh solder on each of the power-jack terminals, make sure to do this on both sides of the motherboard. Then install the power-jack back into the motherboard. Make sure the power-jack ins on a flat surface to insure that the contact points are even and that there is no space. Now solder the contact points, sealing the power-jack in place, and your done! All that’s left is for you to put the motherboard back into place and enjoying the success of your laptop power jack repair.

T-Mobile launches laptop stick with attractive promotional plan

Many of you will be happy to know that USA’s T-Mobile is now offering a new USB dongle for your laptop that also acts as a portable HD for any of you who are interested in accessing the company’s 3G network through your laptop. A pretty nifty little device, if I do say so myself. Unfortunately, you won’t be getting Catherine Zeta Jones along with it, but you will be getting 2 new rates. (Which is almost as good, right)?

The webConnect Jet has up to a pretty hefty 8 gigabytes of microSD storage (installable), and comes free with a 2 year contract. If you buy before January 13th, you’ll be able to have access to 200 megabytes of data for a mere 30 bucks a month or 5 gigabytes of data for only 50 bucks a month. You will also be eligible to get an unlimited T-Mobile WiFi access plan with the device. Not a bad package at all.

T-Mobile has also launched another new 3G phone called “Tap”. It’s small, it’s rounded, and it has a touchscreen display with a 2 mp camera that comes with vid capture & playback. It also comes equipped with such standards as GPS, Bluetooth, and a music player. The Tap is going for 80 bucks if you get a 2 year contract (after a mail-in rebate, of course).

After losing 77 thousand subscribers in their last quarter, T-Mobile is busting their butt to build up-and-out the 3G network, which is so far the smallest 3G provider out of the Tier 1 group. Thankfully, the provider plans to pick up the speed next year by using HSPA+ which supposedly has downlink speeds of up to 21 Mbps. Not too bad if they actually pull it off!

Speck Launches Airport Friendly Laptop Storage

When one thinks of New York’s Fashion Week, one typically thinks of a lot of skinny broads pawing at scummy old men’s jackets, lots of parties, quite a few drugs, and even the occasional pretty dress. One doesn’t typically think of brand spanking new laptop bags created in hopes of making travelling a little easier on the high-tech gear. Imagine everyone’s surprise when a messenger bag with a computer compartment that divides and lays flat specifically for high-speed security screenings.

While Speck doesn’t actually promise you’ll be able to run past the metal detector in mere seconds, it does say that the “Fly” is definitely one of the most airport friendly notebook bags, while still abiding by the US’s standards. It can fit a notebook up to 15’’ in size.

A nifty little aspect here is that the laptop compartment happens to be equipped with a side zipper so you don’t have to struggle pulling the whole damn bag out when wanting to get at your notebook. Some of the other features are things such as super-plus micro fleece stuffing and padding, storage for your media player and headphone passthroughs, adjustable (yet comfortable) nylon “seat belt style” shoulder straps, and millions of little pockets to shove unwanted things you’ll forget about later.

So you might be wondering what it was doing at Fashion Week? Matching prices and color schemes. It comes in two indistinguishable colors – Speakeasy Grey Pinstripe and the also-ever-bland GrayScale Pixel. Yes, they actually spelled grey two ways. I guess it was their attempt to be international and daring. Or maybe they’re just …odd. Anyway, it’s out and about in the US of A now, at a whopping 90 dollars.

Maybe I’m a cheapskate, because I’d prefer to spend 20 bucks, maybe 50 tops. But if it can save me hours out of my life stopping for airport security, then maybe it’s worth the extra money? Try it out first and let me know if it’s worth all that cash!

Easy Tips to Clean your Laptop Keyboard

It’s not a secret that the absolute best way to ensure that your keyboard is clean is to clean it on a regular basis. No, I don’t mean soap and water. I mean a can of compressed air. It safely blows away dust right from the little dips and crevices of your keys. You’ll get better results if you first run something such as a q tip or pipe cleaner between the keys to loosen things up. After that, you simply need to put the nozzle between the keys and blow.

A couple of cans are likely to cost you around 10 dollars, so if it’s a serious spill and you like ‘em cheap, it may be easier to run down to your local store and just pick up a new, five dollar keyboard. However, if you like the keyboard and don’t want to have to replace it, the cans should suffice.

Now if you have some gross stuff going on (sticky, hairy, matted), and you still don’t just want to get a new keyboard, the best thing to do would be to pop off all of your keys, grout out all the matted muck with tweezers or some other pointy-but-not-sharp thing, and go over the entire keyboard with a q-tip and alcohol. (Needless to say, it will take more than one a-tip, and a crap load of alcohol).

But if you have the patience and the keyboard means that much to you, it’s definitely worth doing. I’ve actually had to do it before, and while it sounds awful, it’s not too bad. Plus it’s kind of fun when (if you have to share the computer) you put the keys on all wrong and leave people to wonder. Endlessly funny, especially when dealing with those not very familiar with a keyboard!

Microsoft Launches Windows 7 USB Installer for Netbooks

Microsoft is now allowing netbook operators to DL and install its latest OS, Windows 7, using only a USB stick. This is a cool little way of getting around the fact that netbook users cannot simply burn an ISO to their computers as they have no CD/DVD drive. Very cool! In the US, Microsoft stores offers customers the option to download the new OS onto a USB stick and install it onto their netbooks by simply making a couple of small changes in BIOS so that it boots up directly from the USB key.

In typical Microsoft fashion, you can have the Home Premium, Professional, or even the Ultimate versions of 7, but not the “Starter” edition that was specially designed for netbooks. As netbook users, though we find it entertaining, we do hope that it’s an oversight Microsoft will see to in the not-to-distant future.

Microsoft acknowledges that many netbook users run the XP OS, and said that it simply wants to make the switch a little easier for those willing to venture forth into the unexplored. Though with the constant flip-floppery of Microsoft and its products, some people may want to stick with older OS models.

(May I remind you that, despite appearances, 7 follows Vista, not XP)?

Still, for those of you who would like to try it out, it’s a pretty cool feature, and I’m impressed (for the most part) with Microsoft’s consideration for the humble netbook user.

Worldbench 6 Released for Windows 7 Laptops

PC World’s latest version of WorldBench is available now! WorldBench 6 is the new benchmark designed to now test personal computers that operate on Windows 7. Though the user interface is quite similar to previous WorldBench models, they’ve made it much more computer-friendly, able to run both on 32 and 64 bit, as well as on 7, Vista, and XP.

In keeping with tradition, WorldBench 6 uses an application-based test to more thoroughly gauge a real-world system performance. They say that they’ve heightened their tests to get a more realistic assessment of the new, much more powerful systems. The test applications on WB6 include Adobe, Autodesk, Firefox, MS Office, MS Media, Nero 7, Roxio, and WinZip.

Best of all, WB6 is fully automated! The tests are scripted to run at the one right after the other, and the benchmark combines all of the results and compares them with the system’s baseline automatically, coming up with WB’s final score. Most conveniently, I think, it’s easy to remove.

Quick and easy performance with little to no maintenance, and it can recover from a defunct or stopped test. How much better can it get?

Uruguay offers laptops for every Student

Surprisingly, Uruguay can now count itself among the few nations that provide laptops for every primary-school-aged child. On October 13, the XO model laptops were presented to the students by President Tabare Vazquez. The past two years have seen 362,000 students and 18,000 teachers involve themselves in this scheme. “Plan Ceibal” (meaning Education Connect) project has helped so many families connect to the fascinating world of computers and the endlessly entertaining internet for the first time in their lives.

Uruguay hopes to bring a laptop to every child, a scheme called “One Laptop Per Child” which is an organization installed and pioneered by Nicholas Negroponte. Originally, he hoped to simply provide laptops at a reduced price, (only one-hundred dollars) but found them to be too expensive. The program has cost the state two-hundred-sixty dollars per child, with maintenance costs, repairs, internet connection, and training for teachers. Still, the is less than five percent of the country’s educational budget.

About seventy percent of the XO models were given to students who did not have a home computer. Miquel Brechner, Technological Laboratory of Uruguay’s director, who is in charge of the Plan Ceibal project, was quoted as saying, in so many words, that it’s not just an education program. It’s about bringing the world of technology and knowledge to everyone.

While quite a few teachers were opposed to computers in classrooms at first, most of them have embraced it since. Though some still choose not to have computers in the classroom, most do. Change is difficult, but with proper preparation, it can do great things.

The laptops have been ridiculed mostly due to the fact that they run on a Linux OS, with an interface by the name of Sugar. People have argued that it’s not mainstream enough. Many who support these laptops, however, say that it shouldn’t matter what OS someone learns on. It’s the fact that they’re being taught to use one at all. The annual cost may seem like it would be expensive, but maintenance will only run about thirteen dollars per student.
Future plans include giving laptops to preschools as well as secondary schools. They also want to keep all students currently in the program connected to the net. It’s a new, fast paced world, and they want to keep up. An admirable start!

Easy Techniques to Upgrade to Windows 7 from Windows XP

Now that Windows 7 is officially available, I know quite a few of you will be thinking of upgrading. But if you’re upgrading from Windows XP, you’ll run into a lot of trouble. Trouble as in you can’t do it. Microsoft has yet to provide a way to run an at place upgrade. Usually that would mean that you would have to completely wipe your hard drive and start over from scratch, but (thankfully) a nifty program titled “PCMover” (from LapLink) makes the upgrade from XP to 7 just as easy as any other.

At only 20 bucks, you’ll be surprised at how accurate this little program is. Think of it as a moving van. You load up your programs, settings, files, what have you, and whisk it away to your new OS. So much easier than having to reinstall every single program. The fact that the programs stay installed from XP to 7 is the main feature that sets PC Mover away from similar products. But like with any great thing, it has its faults. It cannot move every application. Things such as iTunes and other DRM-picky programs cannot be transferred. Never fear, though, most programs are easily transferred.

I decided to test this thing out for myself with a relatively simple netbook. I had things such as Skype, Camstudio, AVG, and Trillian …along with iTunes loaded up as well as many pictures, videos, and various files. The process was pretty simple overall. The only confusion came from the part of the instructions were wrong in the program itself. A quick look in the manual corrected it, however. Not really an issue, but I’d rather mention it.

Due to the small size of my netbook’s hard drive, it didn’t at all take long to fulfill the first step (to choose which files to transfer to 7). Its default feature is to move everything, but you can choose to, well, choose your own files. The time it takes to transfer fully depends on the size and amount of things you’re transferring. I highly recommend using the custom installation. This will save everything in a “Windows.old” folder.

The process took about 2 hrs for me, which is longer than other Windows 7 installations that I’ve done, but when you compare that to having to seek out, re-download, and reinstall, it’s not such a hassle. Plus you don’t need to copy your data.

Once all that good stuff was done with, I installed PC Mover onto the new computer, selected the “New Computer” option, and with a few easy prompts, all of my progs, files, and settings were being applied to 7. Again, because my netbook is so small, it only too around ten minutes. One restart later, I had access to my old computer on a new OS.

This is definitely the best way to go, in my opinion. It’s virtually worry-free, and it’s very simple to use. The pros, in my opinion, heavily outweigh the cons. PC Mover is cheap, easy to use, exactly as advertised, and requires absolutely no reinstallation of most of your previous programs. In fairness, the cons are that not every application is transferrable, it doesn’t clean up after itself (deleting old copies once its done), and the first step/second step could be an issue of confusion for some.
