Dell Calls it a day for 12 inch Inspiron

What was long a rumor finally came out in the open as IT bigwigs Dell decided to end further production of the 12 Inch Dell Inspiron. The 12 inch was often seen as hybrid between the 10 inch laptop and the traditional 14 inch and above laptops and it seems that this bold experiment did not quite pay off for Dell. As reported from Dell’s online blog, there are confirmed reports that Dell Inspiron 12 is out of the market while the Inspiron will only be available in limited orders. What is certain is that Dell Inspiron 10 and Inspiron Miniv will rule the roost in the days to come.

What could have been the primary reasons for such a spectacular fall from a grace for a product which was hyped up at the time of launch. Experts believe that the primary reason is the fact the the 12 inch doesn’t quite fit in comparison to the ultra portability of the 10 inch. In addition, the 12 inch is often seen as closed to traditional laptops and people expected greater power than ordinary 10 inch laptops.

With the additional burden of running Windows Vista instead of XP, the Dell Inspiron 12 was unable to give the portability of 10 inch laptops or the power of traditional Inspiron laptops and instead turned out to be a damper. Besides, another reason could be entirely commercial as some analysts would suggest. The 12 inch Inspiron was dragging potential buyers from its regular 14 and 15 inch model leading to lesser revenue which made the culling of the 12 inch Inspiron a good move taking all things into consideration.
With the last 12 inch laptop of the market, where does this leave portable computing to. The biggest issue right now is combining portability, ergonomics, typing comfort and of course raw power. However, with Intel Atom processors growing smaller by the day and with DDR3 RAM generating immense raw power without much energy consumption, the day isn’t far when we would get to see customizable laptops of all sizes and shapes.
