The first step in laptop power jack repair is to take your computer apart and make sure to remove the motherboard. You’ll need the following tools: 1 Soldering iron (Set at around 800-850 F), Standard rosin core solder, De-soldering pump, 99% isopropyl alcohol, 1 clean tooth brush, 1 new DC power jack. What we are going to do is de-solder the power-jack from the motherboard and clean all of the contacts. After that we are going to solder it back, thus fixing your laptops power issue.

Start by add some fresh solder to all 3 of the contact points. By doing this, you’ll make removing the old solder much easier. Next you heat up one of the contact point, and use the de-soldering pump to remove all of the soldering. Repeat this step on the other two contact points.

Very gently grab hold of the power-jack and try to remove it without apply much, if any, force. If you apply to much force when removing the power-jack you can damage the internal copper sleeve, so try to avoid that if possible.

After the power-jack has been removed, clean off all the contacts using a knife. Then apply a fresh coating of solder onto the clean contacts. Also if you have any residue on the motherboard, you can clean this off using a toothbrush. While this is not required, it does make your repair job look much cooler.

Next apply a thin layer of fresh solder on each of the power-jack terminals, make sure to do this on both sides of the motherboard. Then install the power-jack back into the motherboard. Make sure the power-jack ins on a flat surface to insure that the contact points are even and that there is no space. Now solder the contact points, sealing the power-jack in place, and your done!
