There are several details on Dell’s super thin Adamo XPS notebook, the most important being the price. This notebook will be hitting shelves on October 22 with the hefty starting price of $2,000. Many people feel as though Dell’s Adamo XPS is simply in retaliation to Apple’s lightweight Air notebook. Again, it will be hitting shelves on October 22, the same day as Microsoft’s Windows 7 OS makes it début. Business Week reports that the Adamo XPS is merely 0.39’’ thick (the world’s thinnest notebook) and comes included with a special heat-sensing strip on the screen lid, which will open the notebook automatically when swiped. Dell gave us our first glimpse at the $2,000 XPS on a specially created webpage back in September.
The specially designed website offers very few actual details about the new product, and only includes a couple of photos of the XPS’s razor-thin profile. The earlier releases of Adamo this year are almost double the size of the XPS, which is just smaller than 1 centimeter, coming to about four-tenths of an inch. As a comparison, consider that the Apple Air is three-quarters of an inch at its most thick point. For further comparison, the Apple Air retailed(s) for roughly $1,500, which was around the same price as early Adamo models launched back in March.
Ronald G. Garrique, who is head of Dell’s consumer division, confessed to Business Week that he doesn’t expect it to be a high-volume product. Dell expects the product to captivate consumers, and make them curious about other products Dell has to offer.
Currently, Adamo notebooks can come in your choice of pearl or onyx casings. The $1,499 “Admire” and $2,299 “Desire” are both pretty badass, though the Desire with almost double the memory and drive space definitely warrants the $800 price difference. (Not to mention that the Desire model includes mobile broadband capabilities). Some of the shared features are a 13.4’’, 16:9 HD (720p) WLED display, a large keyboard with lighting and scalloped, metallic key designs, an integrated 1.3 megapixel camera & digital mic, & an astounding 5 hr battery life, by using Li-Polymer cells.
Along with this, Dell has felt the need to offer two “luxury” packages. The “Jet-Setter” package and the “Entrepreneur” package. The first of the two costs $1,849 and includes a pearl Adamo, a Tumi notebook case, an external Adamo DVD-RW drive, MS Office Home & Student 2007, & 1 year of premium service. The latter ($1,699) provides a pearl Adamo, external DVD-RW drive, & 1 year of premium service.
